The Front Runner

As Democratic senator Gary Hart (Hugh Jackman) embarks in 1987 on another campaign for the presidency, reporters get wind of a possible extramarital affairā€¦ Matt Baiā€™s book showed us how American journalism was transformed because of the ā€Monkey Businessā€ scandal, but the impact is lessened onscreen, perhaps because weā€™ve seen these stories so many times before and the academic lessons of what happened were better captured in the book. Still, Jackman is perfect as Hart, a brilliant political thinker who suffered from poor personal judgment. Interesting as a comparison to our times, but hardly riveting.
