22 July

THE TRUE STORY OF A DAY THAT STARTED LIKE ANY OTHER.

Paul Greengrass’s take on the 2011 terrorist attack against Norway, where one man blew up the government quarters in Oslo and murdered 68 people, most of them children, on the island of Utøya, is certainly ambitious. Portraying the terrorist, his attorney (who struggled with his own emotions), the Prime Minister (who faced the greatest crisis of his career) and one of Breivik’s young victims who was shot five times and survived is a lot to handle and Greengrass succeeds intermittently. U July 22, released the same year, is far more powerful. Fine Norwegian cast, but why make them speak English?

2018-U.S. 143 min. Color. Written and directed by Paul Greengrass. Book: Åsne Seierstad (”One of Us”). Cast: Anders Danielsen Lie (Anders Behring Breivik), Jon Øigarden (Geir Lippestad), Jonas Strand Gravli (Viljar Hanssen), Thorbjørn Harr, Ola G. Furuseth, Ulrikke Hansen Døvigen.
