Sicario: Day of the Soldado

When the Mexican drug cartels begin helping terrorists across the border, the Defense Department hires Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) to stage a kidnapping in order to start a war among the cartelsā€¦ A stand-alone sequel to Sicario (2015) that tries hard to copy the intense style of that film. The results are worth a look, with plenty of explosive shootouts and good performances from the two leads as men who have a lot in common. Benicio Del Toroā€™s grim yet likable character is arresting and the film leaves open the possibility of another intriguing story about him. A bit sluggish at times, but with the writerā€™s expected, clever Western touches.

2018-U.S.-Italy. 122 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed byĀ Stefano Sollima. Screenplay: Taylor Sheridan. Cinematography: Dariusz Wolski. Cast: Benicio Del Toro (Alejandro Gillick), Josh Brolin (Matt Graver), Isabela Merced (Isabel Reyes), Jeffrey Donovan, Catherine Keener, Manuel Garcia-Rulfoā€¦ Matthew Modine.

Trivia: Alternative title: Sicario 2: Soldado.
