A group of filmmakers shooting a documentary in the Amazon are joined by a Paraguayan snake hunter (Jon Voight) who’s looking for a giant anaconda… Our fascination for what kind of monsters might be hiding in the jungle was likely the reason why this schlock adventure became a box-office hit. It has a sense of humor, with playful nods to Jaws (1975) as the giant snake attacks victims in every outrageous, spectacular way possible. Campy fun, but the characters are dull and not even Voight’s villain is enough of a boost.

1997-U.S. 89 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Luis Llosa. Music: Randy Edelman. Cast: Jennifer Lopez (Terri Flores), Ice Cube (Danny Rich), Jon Voight (Paul Serone), Eric Stoltz, Jonathan Hyde, Owen Wilson… Danny Trejo.

Trivia: Gillian Anderson and Jean Reno were allegedly considered for roles. Followed by Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid (2004), and an additional two TV movies.
