Uncle Buck

HE’S CRUDE. HE’S CRASS. HE’S FAMILY.Ā

When they have to leave for Indianapolis to deal with a family crisis, a suburban Chicago couple reluctantly call the unemployed, irresponsible uncle Buck (John Candy) to look after the kids. A comedy that offers perhaps Candy’s most likable performance as the ne’er-do-well whose sole purpose in the movie is to mature, become a role model and finally marry the girlfriend who’s been waiting for him to shape up. Predictable, but Candy is funny, charming and believable. Much of the story focuses on his antagonistic relationship with the 15-year-old niece, but his scenes with Macaulay Culkin are bigger highlights.

1989-U.S. 100 min. Color. Written and directed byĀ John Hughes. Cast: John Candy (Buck Russell), Amy Madigan (Chanice Kobolowski), Jean Louisa Kelly (Tia Russell), Gaby Hoffmann, Macaulay Culkin, Elaine Bromka… Laurie Metcalf.

Trivia: Co-produced by Hughes. John Goodman and Danny DeVito were allegedly considered for the part of Buck. Followed by two TV series in 1990-1991 and 2016.
