Peter Rabbit

BORN TO BE WILD.

After the death of Mr. McGregor (Sam Neill), Peter Rabbit and his friends consider his vegetable garden theirs for the taking… but then the old man’s nephew (Domhnall Gleeson) arrives. Potter purists may object to this modernized adaptation of her work, but it isn’t remotely as offensive as some would claim. The escalating war between Gleeson’s city boy and the unruly animals begins to resemble Home Alone (1990) after a while, which is the wrong way to go, but much of the film has the same feel, British comfort and sense of humor as the Paddington movies. A few amusing ideas here and there; irreverent voice work by James Corden.

2018-U.S.-Australia. 95 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Will Gluck. Books: Beatrix Potter. Cast: Domhnall Gleeson (Thomas McGregor), Rose Byrne (Bea), Sam Neill (Mr. McGregor). Voices of James Corden (Peter Rabbit), Daisy Ridley, Margot Robbie, Elizabeth Debicki, Sia, Rachel Ward, Bryan Brown.

Trivia: Gleeson, Byrne and Neill also provide voices for three of the animals. Followed by Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway (2021).
