Purple Rain

Prince, talented frontman of the Minneapolis band The Revolution, has a troubled relationship with his dad… and a rival is trying to lure his girlfriend (Apollonia Kotero) away by forming a girl group. A great success for Prince, a largely biographical drama set in his native Minneapolis that becomes a smart showcase for his music. The story teaches us that bad impulses repeat themselves through generations, but that part of the film is thin and clichéd. What makes it compelling is the music and the film’s many concert performances where we hear some of Prince’s greatest songs, including the emotional ”Purple Rain” finale.

1984-U.S. 111 min. Color. Directed by Albert Magnoli. Songs: ”Purple Rain”, ”When Doves Cry”, ”I Would Die 4 U” (Prince). Cast: Prince (The Kid), Apollonia Kotero (Apollonia), Morris Day (Morris), Olga Karlatos, Clarence Williams III, Jerome Benton… The Revolution.

Trivia: Followed by Graffiti Bridge (1990).

Oscar: Best Original Song Score.
