Score: A Film Music Documentary

BEHIND EVERY GREAT FILM IS A GREAT COMPOSER.Ā

Matt Schrader left his job at CBS to make his directing debut, a documentary about film music. With help from historian Leonard Maltin, we get a quick look at the history of movie scores and how they have changed, especially when jazz gained a foothold. We get to meet most of the prominent composers working in Hollywood today (notable exception: John Williams) and are served loving portraits of some of the older masters and their accomplishments. Not always remarkably put together, but moves fast; numerous clips from movies and examples from scores illustrate how the music lifts the images to soaring heights. Interestingly, Schrader also shows how composers work with full orchestras.

2017-U.S. 93 min. Color. Written and directed byĀ Matt Schrader.

Trivia: Among composers interviewed: Hans Zimmer, Danny Elfman, Trent Reznor, Randy Newman, Quincy Jones, Howard Shore, Alexandre Desplat, Patrick Doyle, John Powell, Moby, John Debney, Marco Beltrami, David Arnold and Rachel Portman. Garry Marshall and James Cameron also make appearances.
