War Machine

WE’RE GOING TO LIBERATE THE SHIT OUT OF YOU.

After a successful tour in Iraq, four-star general Glen McMahon (Brad Pitt) is relocated to Afghanistan to help steer that war in the right direction. Former documentary filmmaker David Michôd adapted the book that chronicled General Stanley McChrystal’s time in Afghanistan (which ended in his dismissal), but created a fictional lead character presumably in order to have as much satirical leeway as possible. Starts out amusingly, then gets more serious as the general realizes just how daunting his challenge is. Worth a look but uneven; Pitt’s performance as the rigid but dedicated soldier borders on the cartoonish.

2017-U.S. VOD. 121 min. Color. Widescreen. Written and directed by David Michôd. Book: Michael Hastings (”The Operators”). Cast: Brad Pitt (Glen McMahon), Scoot McNairy (Sean Cullen), Topher Grace (Matt Little), Anthony Hayes, John Magaro, Emory Cohen… Meg Tilly, Griffin Dunne, Ben Kingsley, Tilda Swinton. Cameo: Russell Crowe.

Trivia: Co-produced by Pitt.
