Don’t Breathe

THIS HOUSE LOOKED LIKE AN EASY TARGET. UNTIL THEY FOUND WHAT WAS INSIDE.

Rocky (Jane Levy) and two other young burglars (Dylan Minnette, Daniel Zovatto) break into the Detroit home of a blind Army veteran (Stephen Lang) who’s supposed to have $300,000 in cash… but they don’t know what they’re getting into. After the bloody remake of Evil Dead in 2013, Fede Alvarez aimed for the opposite and delivered a significantly better thriller. The story is sort of an amusing take on Wait Until Dark (1967), but this time the blind person is not the one we’re rooting for. The movie has a good twist and offers many exciting traps inside the house for our protagonists to escape. A decent cast, with Lang as the standout.

2016-U.S. 88 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Fede Alvarez. Screenplay: Fede Alvarez, Rodo Sayagues. Cast: Jane Levy (Rocky), Stephen Lang (Norman Nordstrom), Dylan Minnette (Alex), Daniel Zovatto, Franciska Töröcsik.

Trivia: Co-produced by Sam Raimi. Followed by Don’t Breathe 2 (2021).
