Miss Julie

missjulie14In 1890s Northern Ireland on Midsummer Night’s Eve, the daughter (Jessica Chastain) of a baron tries to seduce a proud valet (Colin Farrell). The August Strindberg play has been filmed many times, most successfully by Alf Sjöberg in 1951, who turned it into so much more than just a filmed play. Liv Ullmann’s first movie as director in 14 years shows Ingmar Bergman’s influence, but her approach to the play is mostly static and uninvolving. The new location’s potential for Anglo-Irish conflict is not satisfyingly explored. Still, explosive acting at times, especially from Farrell.

2014-Norway-Britain-Ireland-France. 129 min. Color. Written and directed by Liv Ullmann. Play: August Strindberg. Cast: Jessica Chastain (Julie), Colin Farrell (John), Samantha Morton (Kathleen).

Trivia: Michelle Williams was allegedly considered for the part of Miss Julie.
