The Devil at 4 O’Clock

48 HOURS OF TERRIFIC SUSPENSE AS NATURE GOES ON A RELENTLESS RAMPAGE OF DESTRUCTION!

devilat4oclockAt the same time as Father Doonan (Spencer Tracy) is being relieved of duty as head of the church at a Pacific island, and three convicts make a stop there, the islandā€™s volcano is about to erupt. Itā€™s been seen as a predecessor to the 1970s Irwin Allen disaster movies, this drama about the effort to save children at a hospital during a volcano eruption. On the whole it has little to offer, apart from explosive special effects that garnered a lot of attention. Slow, and neither Tracyā€™s drunken priest nor Frank Sinatraā€™s criminal with a heart of gold who falls for a blind girl are engaging enough.

1961-U.S. 126 min. Color. Directed byĀ Mervyn LeRoy. Novel: Max Catto. Cast: Spencer Tracy (Matthew Doonan), Frank Sinatra (Harry), Jean-Pierre Aumont (Jacques), Kerwin Mathews, Barbara Luna.
