The Company Men

companymenWhen a Boston shipbuilding giant starts downsizing, Bobby Walker (Ben Affleck) loses his job, but he’s far from the only victim. TV producer and writer John Wells’s feature directing debut is a comment on the Great Recession of 2008, where we follow several white-collar workers and how they react to shockingly changing circumstances, especially Affleck’s character who finds it very hard to accept his fate. An angry attack on corporations that lose their moral compass, and a celebration of small-scale business. Well-acted and compelling, but a greater diversity among those laid off might have been even better.

2010-U.S.-Britain. 104 min. Color. Written and directed by John Wells. Cast: Ben Affleck (Bobby Walker), Tommy Lee Jones (Gene McClary), Chris Cooper (Phil Woodward), Kevin Costner (Jack Dolan), Maria Bello, Rosemarie DeWitt… Craig T. Nelson.
