In 1970, hippie private eye āDocā Sportello (Joaquin Phoenix) looks into several events that are connected to the disappearance of a wealthy real estate developer in California⦠The first screen adaptation of a Thomas Pynchon novel is true to its labyrinthine, energetic style. A special kind of audience will love its freewheeling attitude, the visual solutions and the eclectic soundtrack, but most will find the complicated (read pointless) plot too much of a snooze. A saving grace is the cast, especially Phoenix whoās very funny as the hippie detective, and Josh Brolin as a crew-cut cop.
