Starman

IN 1977 VOYAGER II WAS LAUNCHED INTO SPACE, INVITING ALL LIFEFORMS IN THE UNIVERSE TO VISIT OUR PLANET. GET READY. COMPANY’S COMING.

starmanWhen an alien lands near grieving widow Jenny Hayden’s (Karen Allen) house in Wisconsin, he assumes the physical shape of her late husband (Jeff Bridges) and forces her on a trip to Arizona for a special purpose… An unexpectedly sweet sci-fi story (with overtones of E.T.) from John Carpenter, one that has plenty of warmth, humor and romance. It takes a while to get used to and accept Bridges’s constructed performance as the alien, but it works, and Jack Nitzsche’s sparse, pretty score helps build emotions for the couple. The government’s hunt for the alien is more conventional than anything else. Very uneven special effects.

1984-U.S. 115 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by John Carpenter. Music: Jack Nitzsche. Cast: Jeff Bridges (Starman/Scott Hayden), Karen Allen (Jenny Hayden), Charles Martin Smith (Mark Shermin), Richard Jaeckel.

Trivia: Kevin Bacon and Tom Cruise were allegedly considered for the lead role; John Badham and Tony Scott for directing duties. Followed by a TV series, Starman (1986-1987).
