True Blood

truebloodAlan Ball followed up Six Feet Under (2001-2005) with something completely different, although death was a prominent theme on this show as well. The story began after the creation of synthetic blood, which made it possible for vampires to stop killing people and try to become regular citizens. Focus lay on a telepathic waitress (Anna Paquin) in a small Louisiana town and her fledgling love affair with an aging vampire (Stephen Moyer), but the show painted a vivid portrait of many others in the town. Over the years, it dug deeper into the fantastical, introducing shapeshifters, werewolves and fairies, often with exceptionally bloody results. Always preaching diversity in smart ways, the show also relied heavily on sex (with a very attractive cast and steamy Southern atmosphere), but quickly became repetitious.
