The Little Foxes

BETTE DAVIS IN THE FILM VERSION OF THE STAGE HIT, AS THE RUTHLESS BEAUTY WHOSE AMBITION SPELT THE DOOM OF THREE MEN.

littlefoxesSome time in the early 20th century, several members of a prominent Southern family engage in a battle over the construction of a cotton mill. This adaptation of Lillian Hellman’s lauded play (which was allegedly based on personal experiences) is a dark story that gives Bette Davis a terrific chance to shine as the sister who’s been denied a part of the family fortune and now sees an opportunity for revenge. She’s magnificent, her face frozen in a white mask of bitterness. It takes a while to become involved in these people’s games, but the film uses its archetypes well and tension builds in the story’s second half.

1941-U.S. 116 min. B/W. Produced by Samuel Goldwyn. Directed by William Wyler. Screenplay, Play: Lillian Hellman. Editing: Daniel Mandell. Music: Meredith Willson. Cast: Bette Davis (Regina Giddens), Herbert Marshall (Horace Giddens), Teresa Wright (Alexandra Giddens), Richard Carlson, Patricia Collinge, Dan Duryea.

Trivia: Wright’s debut. Several actors from the Broadway cast repeated their roles. Another Part of the Forest (1948) serves as a prequel to this film.

Quote: “Why, Alexandra! You have spirit after all. I used to think you were all sugar water.” (Davis to Wright)
