Pretty in Pink

BLANE’S A PRETTY COOL GUY. ANDIE’S PRETTY IN PINK. AND DUCKIE’S PRETTY CRAZY.Ā

prettyinpinkWorking-class girl Andie Walsh (Molly Ringwald) meets a preppy boy (Andrew McCarthy) and they fall for each other… but their romance faces opposition. One of the classic John Hughes movies from this era, an entertaining high school flick with a conventional drama among teenagers, but this time with a clear class perspective. James Spader is a delightful “villain”, but so unlikable that we never really get why McCarthy allows his judgment to be clouded by this guy. Still, the two leads make a sweet couple, Jon Cryer is fun as Ringwald’s goofy pal, and the soundtrack has been assembled with great skill.

1986-U.S. 96 min. Color. Directed byĀ Howard Deutch. Screenplay: John Hughes. Song: “If You Leave” (performed by O.M.D.). Cast: Molly Ringwald (Andie Walsh), Jon Cryer (Phil “Duckie” Dale), Andrew McCarthy (Blane McDonnagh), Harry Dean Stanton, Annie Potts, James Spader… Andrew “Dice” Clay, Gina Gershon.

Trivia:Ā Robert Downey, Jr. was allegedly considered as Duckie.
