In 1000 AD, a mysterious, one-eyed Norse warrior (Mads Mikkelsen) is liberated from captivity and joins forces with a group of Christian crusaders headed for Jerusalem. On paper this may look like your average Viking adventure, but it’s much more ambitious than that, with sparse dialogue, intense violence, stark symbolism and stylish cinematography that illustrates One-Eye’s visions of the future. Divided into six chapters, the film wants to say something about spirituality, but is far too often dull and pretentious.
