After the Pope’s death, the conclave in Rome elects a cardinal (Michel Piccoli) who was never one of the frontrunners… but he panics. Director Nanni Moretti once made a movie, The Mass is Ended (1985), about a priest who begins to doubt his faith; this one has similar themes as the aging cardinal escapes from the conclave before his election is announced and spends quality time with the common people. Moretti’s light touch is disarming, but his film never terribly funny or insightful, and the ending is very weak.
