The Hoax

BASED ON THE TRUE STORY. WOULD WE LIE TO YOU?

In the early 1970s, desperate writer Clifford Irving (Richard Gere) tells his publisher that he’s in touch with the reclusive billionaire Howard Hughes and intends to write his biography. A hopeless real-life story to tell, really, since Irving’s hoax couldn’t have ended in any other way that it did, but this movie has enough interesting ingredients to entertain and educate us as to how Irving could pull it off (to the extent he did). His efforts not to be exposed is of course one reason to stay glued. Done with a sense of humor and nice period details; Gere and Alfred Molina are terrific partners in crime.

2007-U.S. 115 min. Color. Directed by Lasse Hallström. Book: Clifford Irving. Cast: Richard Gere (Clifford Irving), Alfred Molina (Dick Suskind), Hope Davis (Andrea Tate), Marcia Gay Harden, Stanley Tucci, Julie Delpy… Eli Wallach, Zeljko Ivanek.
