One Day

The highly anticipated adaptation of David Nicholls’s novel disappointed many fans, but perhaps not those that hadn’t read it. The movie retains the concept of visiting a couple (Anne Hathaway, Jim Sturgess) on the same day, July 15, from the first time they meet as students in 1988 and over twenty years onwards. Their relationship evolves slowly and sometimes we have to fill in the blanks regarding what might have happened since last July 15. Intriguing, albeit without much depth, but it does feel as we get close to Emma and Dex. The lead performances help (if you can take Hathaway’s fake accent).

2011-U.S.-Britain. 107 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Lone Scherfig. Screenplay, Novel: David Nicholls. Cast: Anne Hathaway (Emma Morley), Jim Sturgess (Dexter Mayhew), Patricia Clarkson (Alison Mayhew), Ken Stott, Romola Garai, Rafe Spall.
