Hope Springs

After 31 years, Kay Soames (Meryl Streep) is tired of her stale marriage and drags her grumpy husband (Tommy Lee Jones) to a marriage counsellor (Steve Carell) in Maine. Marketed as a comedy (probably because of Carell’s history), this is in fact a drama that addresses the challenges that lie ahead for any couple that have allowed their marriage to slide into nothing more than an agreement between partners. Watching the Soames’s journey to self-improvement is entertaining and believably awkward, although the final resolution feels rushed and Carell never turns into more than just a character in a movie.
