The Mirror Crack’d

MIRROR, MIRROR ON THE WALL, WHO IS THE MURDERER AMONG THEM ALL?

In 1953, a big Hollywood production arrives in an English hamlet to shoot a movie, but the murder of a local woman arouses Miss Marple’s (Angela Lansbury) curiosity. Another star-studded movie version of an Agatha Christie novel, this time featuring very entertaining performances by Kim Novak and Elizabeth Taylor as two catty stars who loathe each other; Rock Hudson is caught in the middle. They’re so much fun that one almost forgets about the mystery, but it becomes more interesting after a while. Lansbury is a solid, sophisticated Marple, albeit not as amusingly eccentric as Margaret Rutherford.

1980-Britain. 105 min. Color. Directed by Guy Hamilton. Novel: Agatha Christie (“The Mirror Crack’d from Side to Side”). Cast: Angela Lansbury (Jane Marple), Elizabeth Taylor (Marina Rudd), Rock Hudson (Jason Rudd), Kim Novak (Lola Brewster), Tony Curtis, Edward Fox… Geraldine Chaplin, Charles Gray, Pierce Brosnan.

Trivia: Natalie Wood was allegedly considered for a role.

Quote: “Lola, dear, you know, there are really only two things I dislike about you. Your face.” (Taylor to Novak)
