Bridesmaids

Just when her life is falling apart, best friend Lillian (Maya Rudolph) asks Annie (Kristen Wiig) to be her maid of honor… and she immediately becomes very competitive. Another overlong Judd Apatow production that suffers from a meandering screenplay that doesn’t know how to take its characters in fresh directions. Some critics made too much of the female-centric theme; whenever the filmmakers try to turn serious, they’re in over their heads. Still, the movie’s better at generating easy laughs throughout the story, with a lot of help from its cast, particularly Melissa McCarthy and Jon Hamm (as a moronic sex buddy).

2011-U.S. 125 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Paul Feig. Screenplay: Kristen Wiig, Annie Mumolo. Cast: Kristen Wiig (Annie Walker), Maya Rudolph (Lillian Donovan), Rose Byrne (Helen Harris III), Wendi McLendon-Covey, Ellie Kemper, Melissa McCarthy… Jill Clayburgh. Cameo: Jon Hamm.

Trivia: Co-produced by Judd Apatow. Clayburgh’s final film.

Quote: “I’m glad he’s single because I’m going to climb that like a tree.” (McCarthy)
