Amelia

VISIONARY. LOVER. DREAMER. FIGHTER. LEGEND. ICON.

ameliaThe story of how Amelia Earhart fell in love with flying airplanes at a time when it was not only dangerous but also a man’s job gets the traditional Hollywood treatment by director Mira Nair. We follow the groundbreaking aviator as she accomplishes herself in the sky and challenges America’s perception of how a woman ought to live, in terms of career and marriage. Perhaps I’m unfair, but it does invite comparisons with Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator (2004). Nair should have studied it; this biopic is entirely by the numbers.

2009-U.S. 111 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Mira Nair. Screenplay: Ronald Bass, Anna Hamilton Phelan. Books: Susan Butler (“East to the Dawn”), Mary S. Lovell (“The Sound of Wings”). Cast: Hilary Swank (Amelia Earhart), Richard Gere (George Putnam), Ewan McGregor (Gene Vidal), Christopher Eccleston, Joe Anderson, Cherry Jones… Mia Wasikowska.
