In Dreams

YOU DON’T HAVE TO SLEEP TO DREAM.

Claire Cooper (Annette Bening) has nightmares about a little girl being kidnapped by a serial killer and realizes that her mind is somehow connected to that of the murderer. It starts out well enough with an imaginative vision of an abandoned town that lies at the bottom of a reservoir, and continues with Bening’s gripping nightmares. The film is eerie and well staged, but in his attempts to build tension further director Neil Jordan loses control and one grows tired of his overblown antics. The story isn’t entirely satisfying either, but Bening does her best.

1999-U.S. 99 min. Color. Directed by Neil Jordan. Screenplay: Neil Jordan, Bruce Robinson. Novel: Bari Wood (“Doll’s Eyes”). Cast: Annette Bening (Claire Cooper), Robert Downey, Jr. (Vivian Thompson), Aidan Quinn (Paul Cooper), Stephen Rea, Paul Guilfoyle, Dennis Boutsikaris.
