Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

ferrisbuellerHigh-school teen Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) pretends to be sick and spends the day with his best friends (Alan Ruck, Mia Sara)… but the Dean of Students (Jeffrey Jones) is on to him. This John Hughes comedy has become a classic, much-loved even by many critics. I can certainly see the charm, but not much depth or originality. Much like the previous year’s Breakfast Club, the movie portrays an abyss between teens and adults, but that earnest theme falls in the shadow of the amusing and warm-hearted shenanigans of Ferris and his friends on their day off. Excellent performances; Jones is great fun.

1986-U.S. 103 min. Color. Widescreen. Written and directed by John Hughes. Cast: Matthew Broderick (Ferris Bueller), Alan Ruck (Cameron Frye), Mia Sara (Sloane Peterson), Jeffrey Jones, Jennifer Grey, Cindy Pickett… Charlie Sheen, Ben Stein.

Trivia: Rob Lowe, Tom Cruise and John Cusack were allegedly considered for the lead. Followed by a TV series, Ferris Bueller (1990-1991).

Quote:¬†‚ÄúIn 1930, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, in an effort to alleviate the effects of the‚Ķ Anyone? Anyone?‚Ķ the Great Depression, passed the‚Ķ Anyone? Anyone? The tariff bill? The Hawley-Smoot Tariff Act? Which, anyone? Raised or lowered?‚Ķ raised tariffs, in an effort to collect more revenue for the federal government. Did it work? Anyone? Anyone know the effects? It did not work, and the United States sank deeper into the Great Depression. Today we have a similar debate over this. Anyone know what this is? Class? Anyone? Anyone? Anyone seen this before? The Laffer Curve. Anyone know what this says? It says that at this point on the revenue curve, you will get exactly the same amount of revenue as at this point. This is very controversial. Does anyone know what Vice President Bush called this in 1980? Anyone? Something-d-o-o economics. ‚ÄėVoodoo‚Äô economics.‚ÄĚ (Stein trying to teach his uninspired class)
