The People vs. George Lucas

peoplevsgeorgelucasOnce upon a time there was a filmmaker who made some of the most commercially successful movies in history. Millions of fans hailed his genius. Later he decided to start tinkering with the films, inserting CGI effects and making unnecessary changes. When he subsequently made three new episodes of his franchise, they were heavily anticipated by the fans… who were horribly disappointed. This documentary presents the case against George Lucas, a man both loved and hated by every die-hard Star Wars fan out there. We meet some of them here, as well as a few celebrities like Neil Gaiman, who give us insight into the cult-like following. Well structured and entertaining, the film makes a few points that Lucas should heed.

2010-U.S. 93 min. Color. Produced by Anna Higgs, Robert Muratore, Vanessa Philippe, Kerry Deignan Roy. Written and directed by Alexandre O. Philippe.

Trivia: First shown at film festivals, then released on DVD.

Last word:¬†‚ÄúIn many ways,¬†‘The People vs. George Lucas’¬†is a tribute to the YouTube generation, which Lucas‚Äô advances in technology helped create.¬†On a more profound level, it‚Äôs about how new media interacts with old media, as well as ownership and copyright in the digital age; and it was our intent from Day 1 to give the fans a prevailing voice in the doc.‚ÄĚ (Philippe, Wired)
