WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU SLEEP?
At nights, Katie (Katie Featherston) is plagued by a demon but her boyfriend (Micah Sloat) is less than convinced… until the paranormal activities become drastically more intense. This smash-hit chiller was made for less than $15,000 but made hundreds of millions; shot with a simple video camera, director Oren Peli makes the movie look like footage rescued from a house in San Diego where a haunting had catastrophic consequences. At its most effective, the movie has the cam chronicling what happens when the couple is sleeping. The two leads are annoying at times, but always easy to believe in… and the shocks are genuinely frightening.
2009-U.S. 86 min. Color. Produced by Jason Blum, Oren Peli. Written, directed, photographed and edited by Oren Peli. Cast: Katie Featherston (Katie), Micah Sloat (Micah), Mark Fredrichs (Fredrichs).

Followed by five sequels, starting with Paranormal Activity 2 (2010), and a spin-off, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (2014). Remade in Japan as Paranormal Activity 2: Tokyo Night (2010).
Last word: “Basically the entire crew for the original shoot of the movie was myself, my best friend Amir that I’ve known since I was 13 and my girlfriend I was living with at the time, and she became a reluctant helper because we didn’t have a set and were shooting the movie at home, but she did help a lot in every aspect of production. The only thing I couldn’t figure out how to do on my own was make-up, so I did hire a make-up artist. But that was basically the entire crew.” (Peli, Moviefone)
