About Last Night…

MAKING LOVE WAS EASY… BEING IN LOVE DIFFICULT.

aboutlastnight86It’s hard to think of this film as based on a David Mamet play – the dialogue is far from memorable and the story has nothing original or interesting to say. We follow a Chicago couple from the moment they first meet, throughout the occasional rough patches, their break-up and inevitable reconciliation. Rob Lowe and Demi Moore, reunited after St. Elmo’s Fire (1985), are attractive but the movie feels too construed to move us in a genuine way. James Belushi and Elizabeth Perkins are stereotypical sidekicks that offer scant amusement.

1986-U.S. 113 min. Color. Directed by Edward Zwick. Play: David Mamet (“Sexual Perversity in Chicago”). Cast: Rob Lowe (Danny Martin), Demi Moore (Debbie), James Belushi (Bernie Litgo), Elizabeth Perkins, George DiCenzo, Michael Alldredge… Catherine Keener.

Trivia: Phoebe Cates was allegedly considered for the part of Debbie. Remade as About Last Night (2014).
