Clash of the Titans

AN EPIC ENTERTAINMENT SPECTACULAR!

Perseus (Harry Hamlin) becomes a pawn in the game between two gods, one of which is his father, Zeus (Laurence Olivier). Greek mythology is the stuff of this fantasy adventure where gods behave just like men (i.e. badly). It was the last movie Ray Harryhausen worked on as a visual effects artist; his efforts may seem much too dated now, but they are an imaginative reminder of similarly-themed films like Jason and the Argonauts (1963). Hamlin is wooden in the lead and some of the ingredients are just too silly… but it’s a guilty pleasure.

1981-Britain. 118 min. Color. Directed by Desmond Davis. Visual Effects: Ray Harryhausen, and others. Cast: Laurence Olivier (Zeus), Harry Hamlin (Perseus), Judi Bowker (Andromeda), Burgess Meredith, Siân Phillips, Maggie Smith… Claire Bloom, Ursula Andress, Flora Robson.

Trivia: Co-produced by Harryhausen. Remade as Clash of the Titans (2010).
