No Way Out

IS IT A CRIME OF PASSION, OR AN ACT OF TREASON?

nowayoutNavy officer Tom Farrell (Kevin Costner) is posted at the Pentagon where he starts having an affair with Susan Atwell (Sean Young)… who turns out to be the Secretary of Defense’s (Gene Hackman) mistress. This remake of The Big Clock (1948) ups the ante by moving the story to the corridors of (considerable) power. The last hour of the film has many nail-biting moments as our hero tries everything to keep himself out of a conspiracy that could falsely implicate him. Costner is a terrific every-day hero and Will Patton is memorable as the Secretary’s sleazy assistant. The sexy scene in a limo has become a minor classic, but the final sequence looks like an alternative ending that should have been rejected.

1987-U.S. 116 min. Color. Widescreen. Produced by Laura Ziskin, Robert Garland. Directed by Roger Donaldson. Screenplay: Robert Garland. Cinematography: John Alcott. Music: Maurice Jarre. Cast: Kevin Costner (Tom Farrell), Gene Hackman (David Brice), Sean Young (Susan Atwell), Will Patton, Howard Duff, George Dzundza… Iman, Fred Dalton Thompson.

Last word: “I think you’ve got to get some good kissing in there somewhere. (Laughs) That’s where it all starts. And if you can hook the audience on the fact that the characters are really connecting with each other on the screen, that’s where it all starts and finishes. I think love scenes are always tricky to shoot because not only are the actors nervous about doing them, but the audience doesn’t want to feel uncomfortable. So you have to get a bit of fuel in there – that always helps. Scenes like what was in ‘No Way Out’ where the actors are in the back of a limo and the guy is looking in his rear view mirror. Those moments get remembered for a long time.” (Donaldson, Star Pulse)
