Grey Gardens

TRUE GLAMOR NEVER FADES.

Jackie Kennedy’s cousin Edith Bouvier Beale (Drew Barrymore) keeps making stabs at a show biz career, but can’t seem to escape her mother (Jessica Lange) and Grey Gardens, the Long Island home. The 1976 documentary Grey Gardens put the bizarre mother-daughter relationship between the two Ediths on display and this TV movie tries to give the well-publicized story some background. The filmmakers seem very careful to recreate the locations, but we don’t really understand what makes the two ladies tick. However, the stars give outstanding performances and their makeup is first-rate.

2009-U.S. Made for TV. 104 min. Color. Directed byĀ Michael Sucsy. Cast: Drew Barrymore (“Little” Edith Bouvier Beale), Jessica Lange (“Big” Edith Bouvier Beale), Jeanne Tripplehorn (Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis), Ken Howard, Daniel Baldwin, Arye Gross.

Emmys: Outstanding Made for Television Movie, Actress (Lange), Supporting Actor (Howard). Golden Globes: Best TV Movie, Actress (Barrymore).
