NO ONE MAKES IT ALONE.
Sherry Swanson (Maggie Gyllenhaal), fresh out of prison, is trying to stay clean and get a job; she wants to reconnect with her young daughter, but there’s no limit to the challenges ahead. The director is a friend of Gyllenhaal’s mother and gave the actress a part of a lifetime. She certainly dominates the film and makes us connect with and understand a person who has slipped up and is now constantly watched (and easily abused since she is considered to be in no situation to complain). This is like watching an American Ken Loach film; well made in every respect… but not terribly original or moving.
2006-U.S. 96 min. Color. Written and directed by Laurie Collyer. Cast: Maggie Gyllenhaal (Sherry Swanson), Brad William Henke (Bobby Swanson), Sam Bottoms (Bob Swanson, Sr.), Kate Burton, Giancarlo Esposito, Ryan Simpkins… Danny Trejo.
