At the Circus

KEEP THE WORLD LAUGHING.

Attorney J. Cheever Loophole (Groucho Marx) is hired by Tony (Chico Marx) to save the circus where he works; in order to do that they need to come up with money and stay away from the bad guys. You know what you’re getting here – the story is the same as usual, Groucho keeps insulting Margaret Dumont, Chico plays the piano and Harpo plays the, you guessed it, harp. Groucho’s attempts at greasing Dumont are very funny and so are the physical routines of the other two. But the obligatory love story has no spark and that goes for the music as well (apart from “Lydia the Tattooed Lady”).

1939-U.S. 87 min. B/W. Produced by Mervyn LeRoy. Directed by Edward Buzzell. Cast: Groucho Marx (J. Cheever Loophole), Chico Marx (Tony), Harpo Marx (Punchy), Margaret Dumont, Eve Arden, Nat Pendleton.

Trivia: Lana Turner was allegedly considered for a part.

Quote: “I have an agreement with the houseflies. The flies don’t practice law and I don’t walk on the ceiling.” (Groucho Marx)
