California Suite

THE BEST TWO-HOUR VACATION IN TOWN!

A popular but slightly overrated adaptation of the Neil Simon Broadway hit that follows four couples visiting a Beverly Hills hotel, in the same fashion as Plaza Suite (1971). The best episodes are the ones with Michael Caine and Maggie Smith as two Academy Awards attendees, and Jane Fonda and Alan Alda as a divorced couple. They’re not only funny (the movie is peppered with Simon’s trademark wit), but carry some emotional weight as well. The episode with Walter Matthau and a one-night stand is amusing but slight; the one with Richard Pryor and Bill Cosby is merely tiresome. Very uneven, but the cast is fun to watch.

1978-U.S. 103 min. Color. Directed by Herbert Ross. Screenplay, Play: Neil Simon. Cast: Jane Fonda (Hannah Warren), Alan Alda (Bill Warren), Maggie Smith (Diana Barrie), Michael Caine (Sidney Cochran), Walter Matthau, Elaine May… Richard Pryor, Bill Cosby.

Oscar: Best Supporting Actress (Smith). Golden Globe: Best Actress (Smith).
