Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

A BAND OF YOUNG WARRIORS ON THE WINGS OF THEIR GREATEST CHALLENGE!

One thousand years have passed since a devastating nuclear war; in a surviving kingdom, princess Nausicaä is fascinated by the dangers surrounding her home, but others want to erase them with extraordinary means. Director Hayao Miyazaki’s first feature shows great concern for environmental issues, which he would return to in future films. In an era when Disney was on the decline, Miyazaki showed the world that imaginative and colorful animation wasn’t beholden to the Mousedom. A serious-minded adventure that drags in places, but it’s interesting and the eclectic 1980s music compensates.

1984-Japan. Animated. 116 min. Color. Written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. Music: Joe Hisaishi. Voices of Sumi Shimamoto (Nausicaä), Mahito Tsujimura (Jihl), Hisako Kyôda (Oh-Baba), Gorô Naya, Ichirô Nagai, Kôhei Miyauchi.

Trivia: Original title: Kaze no tani no Naushika. Alternative U.S. title: Warriors of the Wind (but that version is heavily re-edited). The following actors provided voices in the American dubbing: Mark Hamill, Uma Thurman, Shia LaBeouf, Alison Lohman, Edward James Olmos and Patrick Stewart.
