The Science of Sleep

CLOSE YOUR EYES. OPEN YOUR HEART.

scienceofsleepStéphane Miroux (Gael Gárcia Bernal) returns to Paris where his mother has found a job for him; he moves in next to a woman (Charlotte Gainsbourg) who shares his sense of imagination. Michel Gondry’s follow-up to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) is an odd story set in France that (like its predecessor) portrays how reality blends with dreams and fantasies until they are inseparable. Bernal is charming and the dream sequences (created with models and photographic tricks) are fun, but I lose interest in Stéphane’s quirks and problematic relationships.

2006-France-Italy. 105 min. Written and directed by Michel Gondry. Cast: Gael Gárcia Bernal (Stéphane Miroux), Charlotte Gainsbourg (Stéphanie), Alain Chabat (Guy), Miou-Miou, Pierre Vaneck, Emma de Caunes.

Trivia: Original title: La science des rêves. Rhys Ifans was allegedly considered for the lead part.
