Lars and the Real Girl

THE SEARCH FOR TRUE LOVE BEGINS OUTSIDE THE BOX.

When eccentric loner Lars Lindstrom (Ryan Gosling) introduces his brother and sister-in-law (Paul Schneider, Emily Mortimer) to his new girlfriend, and she turns out to be a sex doll, the local doctor (Patricia Clarkson) tells the Lindstroms that they should go along with Lars’s fantasy. Director Craig Gillespie also made Mr. Woodcock in 2007 but this indie comedy is what stands out. A sweet, funny and ultimately touching story about loneliness and a mental crisis that is going to take time, a lot of understanding and a gentle touch to solve. Set in frozen Wisconsin, the cast will keep you warm, especially Gosling who’s brilliant as the shy, odd Lars. “Bianca” though is one creepy gal.

2007-U.S. 106 min. Color. Produced by Sarah Aubrey, John Cameron, Sidney Kimmel. Directed by Craig Gillespie. Screenplay: Nancy Oliver. Cast: Ryan Gosling (Lars Lindstrom), Emily Mortimer (Karin Lindstrom), Patricia Clarkson (Dagmar), Kelli Garner, Paul Schneider.

Last word: “I said to Craig, ‘How are you going to shoot [Bianca]?’ He said, ‘I’m going to treat her as though she has a nudity clause in her contract.’ He meant it, and he did that. He required that everybody treat her like an actress. She got magazines between takes. She had her own trailer, they changed her in her trailer. She came on set and she was treated like any other actor.” (Gosling, Beliefnet)
