ONLY THE BEST MURDER CASES MAKE THE SIX O’CLOCK NEWS.

Darryll Deaver (William Hurt), a janitor, finds a body at his workplace; when a beautiful reporter (Sigourney Weaver) starts covering the story, Darryll tries to get closer to her. Director Peter Yates reunited with his Breaking Away (1979) writer for a thriller but forgot to make it exciting, focused and fast-paced. It’s a little too pretentious; the filmmakers want us to find depth in all of the characters even when they are of little interest to the story. The movie is full of actors who would turn into movie stars, and the climax has its thrills, but the plot isn’t so hot.
