JOURNEY TO TEMPTATION. BUT BE SURE YOU KNOW YOUR WAY BACK.
Young Australian Ruth Barron (Kate Winslet) has fallen under the spell of a guru in India; her parents lure her back home to be deprogrammed by an American, P.J. Waters (Harvey Keitel). Winslet is excellent as the fiercely independent cult victim, and that’s a key part in Jane Campion’s film. It’s a story about what kind of effect men and women have on each other, but its primary theme is the contentious relationship between a psychologist and his patient. Unfortunately, the movie falls apart because of Keitelās utterly unconvincing character.
