Ariel

arielWhen a mine worker (Turo Pajala) receives a Cadillac as a gift from a colleague who subsequently blows his brains out, he abandons his old life and heads for southern Finland. Director Aki Kaurismäki reportedly hated making this movie, but it became his international breakthrough. Fans will recognize themes and style from his previous films, but the story, which lands its main character in prison, is more engaging and better paced this time. The second film in the “proletariat trilogy” clearly shows how much the director cares for his working-class heroes; emotions may be underplayed, but they touch us nonetheless.

1988-Finland. 74 min. Color. Produced, written and directed by Aki Kaurismäki. Cast: Turo Pajala (Taisto Kasurinen), Susanna Haavisto (Irmeli Pihlaja), Matti Pellonpää (Mikkonen).

Trivia: The other two films in the trilogy are Shadows in Paradise (1986) and The Match Factory Girl (1990).
