Inside Deep Throat

IT WAS FILMED IN 6 DAYS FOR 25,000 DOLLARS. THE GOVERNMENT DIDN’T WANT YOU TO SEE IT. IT WAS BANNED IN 23 STATES. IT HAS GROSSED OVER 600 MILLION DOLLARS. AND IT IS THE MOST PROFITABLE FILM IN MOTION PICTURE HISTORY.

The directors made several documentaries about sex and violence, but haven’t had mainstream success. This film did gain some attention though in telling the story of how Deep Throat (1972) had a great impact on society; it is the only hardcore porn film ever to be widely discussed by the cultural elite. We’re introduced to people involved in the production and several interesting cultural profiles give us their take. We learn how President Richard Nixon started a crusade against smut with questionable results… but also how the actors suffered after making the movie. However, this doc doesn’t come up with much more than the familiar notion that porn went south with the advent of video.

2005-U.S. 92 min. Color. Directed by Fenton Bailey, Randy Barbato. Narrated by Dennis Hopper.

Trivia: Among those interviewed: Carl Bernstein, Dick Cavett, Wes Craven, Alan Dershowitz, Larry Flynt, Hugh Hefner, Erica Jong, Bill Maher, Norman Mailer, Gore Vidal and John Waters.
