How the Grinch Stole Christmas

howthegrinchstolechristmasThe green Grinch (Jim Carrey) hates Christmas and the people of Whoville hate him, but a little girl (Taylor Momsen) wants to change that. Director Ron Howard delivers his Toys (1992) or Popeye (1980), i.e. a noisy, expensive disaster of a movie made by a good filmmaker who is suffering from temporary insanity. The production design is as artificial as can be, the camera never stops moving and Momsen is cute in a sickening way. The barely recognizable Carrey is wasted.

2000-U.S. 105 min. Color. Directed by Ron Howard. Novel: Dr. Seuss. Makeup: Rick Baker, Gail Ryan. Cast: Jim Carrey (The Grinch), Jeffrey Tambor (Augustus Maywho), Christine Baranski (Martha May Whovier), Taylor Momsen (Cindy Lou Who), Bill Irwin, Molly Shannon. Narrated by Anthony Hopkins.

Trivia: Tim Burton was allegedly considered for directing duties; Eddie Murphy was allegedly considered for the part of the Grinch.

Oscar: Best Makeup.

Quote:¬†‚ÄúThe nerve of those Whos. Inviting me down there ‚Äď and on such short notice. Even if I wanted to go my schedule wouldn‚Äôt allow it. Four o‚Äôclock, wallow in self pity; 4:30, stare into the abyss; 5:00, solve world hunger, tell no one. 5:30, jazzercize. 6:30, dinner with me. I can‚Äôt cancel that again. 7:00, wrestle with my self-loathing; I‚Äôm booked. Of course, if I bump the loathing to 9 I could still be done in time to lay in bed, stare at the ceiling and slip slowly into madness. But what would I wear?‚ÄĚ (Carrey gets an invitation from the people of Whoville)
