Some time in the early 19th century, French adventurer Edmond Dantes (Jim Caviezel) is wrongly imprisoned after being betrayed by a “friend”; a decade later, he comes looking for revenge. This conventional movie version of the Alexandre Dumas classic was made by a director who doesn’t deserve his bad reputation. He makes sure the movie is handsome and entertaining, and includes a thrilling final duel. Having actors who know their stuff is also a big help. Caviezel avoids turning his hero into a dull cliché; Guy Pearce makes us hate the bad guy, and that’s all we should ask for.
