IN MUSIC SHE FOUND HER DREAM, HER LOVE, HERSELF.
The only purpose of this film was to boost Mariah Carey’s troubled career. Nothing wrong with that as long as everyone involved delivers, but they don’t. The songs are forgettable and Carey never feels right as the young artist who is discovered in the 1980s by a DJ (Max Beesley). As expected, the writing sucks, the subplot about Carey’s mother is dull and director Vondie Curtis Hall’s visual tricks never succeed in making this nonsense find its rhythm.
2001-U.S. 104 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed by Vondie Curtis Hall. Cast: Mariah Carey (Billie Frank), Max Beesley (Julian “Dice” Black), Da Brat (Louise), Tia Texada, Valerie Pettiford, Ann Magnuson.
Trivia: After the failure of the movie and the soundtrack album, EMI paid Carey $32 million to terminate the contract.
Razzie: Worst Actress (Carey).
