The Swan

theswanPrince Albert (Alec Guinness) is about to visit exiled family members of his; one purpose of the visit is to get him interested in princess Alexandra (Grace Kelly), but thatā€™s a challenge. When Kelly announced that she would marry Prince Rainier of Monaco it was decided that she should star in this remake of a 1925 film where she would get to play a princess. Sheā€™s beautifully regal, but neither she nor Louis Jourdan as her would-be lover are as watchable as Guinness and Jessie Royce Landis. Itā€™s a likable film, but the material is on the weak side and director Charles Vidor does nothing special with it.

1956-U.S. 112 min. Color. Widescreen. Directed byĀ Charles Vidor. Play: Ferenc MolnĆ”r. Cast: Grace Kelly (Princess Alexandra), Alec Guinness (Prince Albert), Louis Jourdan (Nicholas Agi), Agnes Moorehead, Jessie Royce Landis, Brian Aherne… Leo G. Carroll.

Trivia:Ā One Romantic NightĀ (1930) is another version of the play.
