A Month by the Lake

A CHARMING, WEALTHY ENGLISH GENTLEMAN. TWO BEAUTIFUL WOMEN. IF IT ONLY TAKES A MOMENT TO FALL IN LOVE, IMAGINE WHAT CAN HAPPEN IN…

monthbythelakeIn 1937, Miss Bentley (Vanessa Redgrave), a British spinster, spends the summer in a villa on Lake Como; she falls for a major (Edward Fox), but heā€™s nevertheless charmed by a young American, Miss Beaumont (Uma Thurman). A pleasant, unremarkable little film from an equally unremarkable director; it might as well have been a TV movie. The story is old-fashioned and itā€™s hard to see what Miss Bentley finds appealing in the haughty, wooden major, but Redgrave is excellent as the freethinking spinster. Nice to see Vittorio Gassmanā€™s son Alessandro as a charmer called Vittorio (of course).

1995-U.S. 94 min. Color.Ā Directed byĀ John Irvin.Ā Novella:Ā H.E. Bates.Ā Cast:Ā Vanessa Redgrave (Miss Bentley), Edward Fox (Major Wilshaw), Uma Thurman (Miss Beaumont), Alida Valli, Alessandro Gassman.
