SOME MYSTERIES WERE NEVER MEANT TO BE SOLVED.
Surprisingly enough, Brazilian director Walter Salles made his Hollywood debut with a remake of a 2002 Hideo Nakata horror movie. The story, about a newly divorced woman and her daughter (Jennifer Connelly, Ariel Gade) who encounter a ghost when they move into a run-down apartment building in New York, is well told, and the gray/green cinematography in combination with the constant raining gives the movie an eerie atmosphere. Director Salle’s effort is a little too familiar for those who know Nakata’s work, but the actors deliver; Connelly’s performance is quite moving.
